March 29, 1973 - A C-130 withdrew the last American combat contingent from Tan Son Nhut Airport in Saigon, but Vietnamese casualties continued to mount until Saigon fell on April 30, 1975. But the Vietnam War - a war which was never officially a war - was over on December 23, 1972, for Major Michael Reardon. He was reported killed in action, body not recovered during a bombing mission of a strategic target on the Northern Vietnam border. His death occurred only days before President Nixon halted the United States air offensive in North Vietnam. Major Reardon joined 58,000 other Americans who would not be coming home from Southeast Asia. The future had held such promise for Michael and Wynne Reardon. Vietnam would be Michael's last overseas assignment. They planned to live on the coast in Northwest Florida where Wynne realized her dream of owning an art studio called Shoreline Gallery. His death shattered these hopes and dreams. Author Smith deftly carries the reader through Wynnes emotional heartache as Wynne deals with remembrances of the love of her husband versus the new love developing with Jason Garrison. Jason is a handsome, skilled potter hired to help make Shoreline Gallery successful. Complicating matters is the fact that Jason was a Vietnam War veteran protestor while Michael won the Medal of Honor posthumously for his last act of valor in the War. Whether or not Jason and Wynnes fragile relationship can survive her persistent hope for Michaels return as a P.O.W., is the question Smith uses effectively to entice the reader to each successive page and chapter.
